12 Stones

Eye-level view of a serene forest path leading into the sunlight

Dear Faith Family,

“When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’  Then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord.  When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.  So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever,” (Joshua 4:6-7).

It leapt off of the page.  A friend was teaching Joshua 4.  There the people of God saw the work of God and remembered the God of His work.  12 Stones!  A reminder of God’s great work. A sermon sac full of stones piled up for all to see.  God had brought His people safely across the Jordan River in His presence!  The stones would cry out!  Are you listening?

Sounded like a great title for a blog.  12 Stones!  It took 6 years and some 336 blogs to finally come up with a title.  But it is more than a title.  It is the very purpose of this blog!  A pile of stones declaring the works of our God! Let me explain.  If you fast forward to the end of Joshua’s life you will encounter a disturbing scene.  And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers.  And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that He had done for Isreal, (Judges 2:10).  That’s all it took.  One generation!

They did not know the Lord or the work that He had done for them!  I, for one, don’t want to short change the next generation or this generation for that matter.  I want the next generation to know our Lord!  We all need to see and hear His works.  Let’s show and tell.  This blog is but one opportunity to pile up stones.

For instance.  Look at that stone.  When God answered twenty plus years of prayer.  The answer?  Another one of God’s children was born!  Or that stone.  When the Good Shepherd provided faithfully for His sheep and enabled us to pay off the mortgage on the buildings that He’s entrusted to us.  Or that stone.  A flock of precious lambs (otherwise known as “sermon sac-ers”) who gather weekly around a pile of stones!  And what about that stone in your hand?  You’ve read the Word of God.  You’ve seen the works of God.  Who, around you, gets to see and hear the works of the Lord and the Lord of the works?

Piling up stones,

Pastor Karl
