Dear Faith Family,
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God, (1 Corinthians 10:31).
In the words of Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, “It’s a dream, it’s electric, there’s no place better on earth.” Who knew that a man could eat 66 hot dogs in just 10 minutes?! Ok, not just the hot dog, itself, but 66 hot dogs each wrapped in an individual, 130 caloric-packed bun. That’s 1 hot dog every 9.09 seconds. And for what? According to my calculations, for a total of just 17,820 calories (140 calories per hot dog and 130 calories per hot dog bun)!
According to apnews.com, it all went down on the fourth of July at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island, a neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. The coveted “mustard belt” together with the $10,000 prize makes it all worthwhile. Right? I wonder if “Jaws” eats another hot dog before next year’s competition?!
True confession: I have zero motivation to eat that many hot dogs, period. You? Much less in a 600 second timeframe. There’s an interesting word, motivation. Two questions: 1. What are you motivated to do? and 2. What motivates you to do what you do? Ok, stop right here just for 60 seconds, (one tenth of the hot dog eating contest) and entertain both of those questions.
Motivation seems to be an important tool of discipleship. Is your life (all of it) choreographed around the glory of God? Are even the mundane tasks of your life performed to the glory of God? They can be. Include Him in all that you do. Recognize His presence in all of life. Talk to Him throughout the day – keep Him on constant speaker phone. He loves to hear you, His child. Ask Him to direct your steps, all of them.
God, alone, is the one who works in us both to will and to do His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13). As you entertain the second question, be ruthlessly honest with yourself. What drives you? What was your life invested in today? May I remind you that God made you for His purposes. Anything less than His glory is settling for second best. May we do all to the glory of God.
