That's What I'm Talking About

Eye-level view of a serene forest path leading into the sunlight

Dear Faith Family,

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear, (Ephesians 4:29).

So, I was headed into the pantry yesterday evening to pick up a few things. Ok, it wasn’t really the panty. It was Walmart. But I call it our pantry. It’s halfway between home and the office. It’s an easy stop to pick up whatever “needs” we may have. That way, our home pantry doesn’t get more food than it already has and any perishables perish elsewhere!

Interesting place, the pantry. You’ll never guess what I heard at the pantry last night. Just before entering a young man passed by on the sidewalk. He made eye contact and said…(Stop right here just for a minute! No, that’s not what he said. What do you think he said?). What he did say was, “God bless you. I hope you’re having a great day!”

No, I didn’t (still don’t) know the guy. Maybe Gabriel?! Got me to thinking. Consider the possibilities that arrive with each new day. Think of your day like a Scrabble board. Each square an opportunity. Your tongue – the tray that holds the letters, lots of letters. With each person you meet you have the opportunity to lay down some letters in the form of a word, in the form of a sentence. Like building blocks, the letters form words that form sentences that form paragraphs that afford you the privilege of construction rather than destruction.

Words of encouragement rather than discouragement. Words of comfort rather than worry. Words of peace rather than war. I think you get the message. How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news! (Romans 10:15)

So, here’s an idea. Take out a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. Start organizing some of those letters to form words and sentences that build up. Compile a repertoire of encouraging words. Be ready when it’s your turn to lay down some words worthy of saying out loud.

That's what I'm talking about,

Pastor Karl
