Real Reality

Eye-level view of a serene forest path leading into the sunlight

Dear Faith Family,

Make yourself an ark of gopher wood, (Genesis 6:14).

“Besides being complicated, reality, in my experience, is usually odd. It is not neat, not obvious, not what you expect….Reality, in fact, is usually something you could not have guessed. That is one of the reasons I believe Christianity. It is a religion you could not have guessed. If it offered us just the kind of universe we had always expected, I should feel we were making it up. But, in fact, it is not the sort of thing anyone would have made up. It has just that queer twist about it that real things have.”  (C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity)

My wife called.  The low tire pressure light showed up uninvited on her dashboard.  Now what?  Fortunately, we live in the era of TPMS (tire-pressure monitoring system).  As I scrolled through her digital dash, I discovered that her right front tire was low.  Easy peasy.  I’ll just add some air.  Wait.  That tire wasn’t low!  Now what?  Exercising my advanced combination of engineering and mechanical skills (ok it took me a while), I discovered that the left rear tire was low.  The TPMS was confused!

What I didn’t tell you was that when I examined the right front tire, I discovered a chunk missing out of its tread!  (insert saucer-sized eye emoji face here) I think it’s called dry rot.  They don’t make things the way that they used to!  The tires are only nine years old.  Don’t judge – they still had plenty of tread left!

Here’s my point.  Reality isn’t what I expected.  In fact, the TPMS was, for our sake, less about low tire pressure and more about the need for replacing four deceased tires.  God is gracious that we didn’t attempt our upcoming grandbaby trip on four deceased tires!

If we could see reality – I mean like He sees it – we might be dangerous.  In the meantime, He calls us to trust Him.  Do you ever get frustrated when you just can’t understand your current circumstances?  Another phone call?  Another appointment?  Another intrusion into your neatly scheduled day?  Now what?  Wouldn’t we like to know?!

Take a deep breath.  Remind yourself who your God is.  He is trustworthy.  He knows what now.  He’s good.  He can be trusted.  Trust Him.  Ask Him to direct your steps.  Follow through and obey what He’s already revealed to you in His Word.

Learning to live in His reality,

Pastor Karl
