Speed Bumps

Dear Faith Family,
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him, (Psalm 37:7).
Mounted on the wall directly in front of me is a television screen. To my left, staring back, are two clock faces. Both, in constant motion. On my desk are two individual computer monitors, each entertaining their own display of endless information. Plugged in behind me is yet another multi-talented computer that we still call a phone. And wrapped around my wrist is a smart watch constantly acting out its best communication impersonation.
Can we consider, even for a moment, the speed of life? Complete with all the distractions? There are the things we just did. The things we’re doing. And the things yet to do.
Today, in parking lots and in some neighborhoods, speed bumps have been installed. Why? To slow us down. To help keep us safe. To encourage us to pay attention.
In the midst of our “fretting” (read Psalm 37), God recorded Psalm 37:7. It’s like His speed bump to slow us down. Here’s a thought, maybe He’s placed some “slow downs” or some “be stillers” to help us pay attention to Him?
It would seem that if all our attention is given to what we did, what we’re doing, and what we’ve yet to do, then fretting is sure to show. So what means is God using to shift your focus on Him and thus arrest fretting? How is He helping you to be still before Him?
Has He introduced people (“intruders”) into your life to slow you down? What about when the power goes out? Is that an inconvenience or an opportunity to be still? Is it really computer failure when your computer refuses to perform its given tasks? Or is it success in that it has slowed you down for a moment to focus on the Lord and to wait patiently for Him? And dare we introduce traffic as good? You know, a speed (or lack thereof) bump to help us be still?
