Bumper Billboards

Eye-level view of a serene forest path leading into the sunlight

Dear Faith Family,

I have been crucified with Christ.  It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.  And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me, (Galatians 2:20).

A lot can be learned when you find yourself in the rear-view mirror of another vehicle.  On the front side of that mirror may be a reflection of the billboards stuck to the back side of that vehicle.  Have you read the statements of identity?  (Disclaimer: read at your own risk!)  There are the marathon distance stickers.  The favorite sports team.  And even the seasonal politician.  Consider some other actual bumper sticker announcements:

  • “Warning My Driving Scares Me Too”

  • “Give Me a Break I’m Stupid”

  • “I Had a Life but My Job Ate It”

  • “My Other Car Is also a Car”

  • “Normal Is Boring”

  • “I Used to Be Cool”

  • “I Don’t Suffer from Insanity I Enjoy Every Minute of It”

So, what do those bumper billboards say about the occupants therein?  (Some of the bumper billboards say I no longer want to be behind that driver! – Jus-sayin’)  Better yet, what bumper billboards are plastered on our lives daily?  Hold on.  Let’s pause for a minute and create our own bumper billboards.  What would yours say?  How would your bumper billboards identify you?

What if we stuck a scrolling billboard on the bumper of our lives?  And what if we scrolled our daily allotment of words (like our conversations at home, at work, on the highway, in prayer) on our bumper billboards?  What would those words tell us about how we identify ourselves?

Did you read Paul’s bumper billboard in Galatians 2:20?  His identity was (and is) in Christ!

Christian, listen to God’s billboard on your life!  He calls you a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), a child of God (John 1:12), a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9).  Keep reading.  He says that you’re forgiven (Ephesians 4:32), no longer condemned (Romans 8:1), at peace with God (Romans 5:1), loved (Romans 8:38-39), and secure (John 10:28).  Don’t stop with those verses alone.  Take time to read what God’s Word (His billboard) has to say!  There’s stuff on His billboard about you!

Learning my new identity in Christ,

Pastor Karl
