Dear Faith Family,
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed the heir of all things, through whom also He created the world, (Hebrews 1:1-2).
“All Scripture must be received as if God, in person, visibly and full of majesty were Himself speaking.” (John Calvin)
Just one of the crowd as we gathered around one of the Harlem Globetrotters in Dutch Square Mall. He was hand picking three individuals from the crowd. “You, right there,” as he pointed to one person. “And you,” he picked out another. “And you. No, not you,” he said to the person in front of me. “The guy behind you.” And he was talking to me. One of the Harlem Globetrotters was talking directly to me!
Zechariah, (You do know Zechariah, right?), started his book with: In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the Word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah…. Striking how many times the prophets began a section of their writings with similar words. Those words paint a proper perspective of what would follow. God was talking directly to them! And, for our sake, God preserved His Word for us. In other words, He’s talking directly to us through His Word!
Can you believe that?! God is talking to us! Think about Genesis three Adam. He’s hiding from God. It wasn’t like God didn’t know what had happened. And yet He spoke. Not generically. Not about Adam. God spoke to Adam. The audacity! The perfect Creator bothered to extend His grace to His sinful subjects in the form of His Word!
So, what’s the point? That our God would talk directly to us through His Word is nothing short of His amazing grace!
When I realized that one of the Harlem Globetrotters was talking directly to me, I placed my hands over my ears! Ok. No. That didn’t happen. Instead, I listened. And I did what he said.
And so, I wonder. When we read the Bible (God’s Word), are we checking a box? Are we daydreaming about what’s coming after? Are we thinking
