Unscrutable!

Dear Faith Family,
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways, (Romans 11:33)!
Well, it happened again! We live in a quaint, somewhat well-kept neighborhood of maybe sixty houses. People keep their grass mowed, their yards free from trash, and their cars in the driveways – mostly. But once a week, I’ve noticed an odd phenomenon. The people appear to remove their unwanted trash (as opposed to their wanted trash) and place it in front of their houses! Imagine an otherwise nice neighborhood littered with trash. It just doesn’t make sense.
No, I haven’t completely lost my mind. Not yet. And yes, I do know why people litter the front yard with their trash. But imagine with me, just for a moment, contemplating the mess with no understanding of what all this trash is about. Somebody needs to inform these people how bad this looks! I mean, they put it out there for a day and then take it back to their backyards. Only to bring it back next week. Can we not go through a week without people trashing their front yards?
What’s the point? When we don’t understand what’s happening, circumstances can prove confusing? Unwanted? Ridiculous? Unnecessary? So, when God moves our “trash” to the front yard…. Do we attempt to inform Him how bad that looks? Do we try to convince Him to stop wheeling that garbage out front? Do we, in our discomfort, explain that such exposure is unnecessary? Even ridiculous?
Like when God brings our other little “g” gods to the front lawn. Or when He spotlights one of our idols. Or when we carry His name and yet refuse to act like Him. When we put ourselves at the center of our lives rather than God. I think we get the picture.
Here’s the thing. If I don’t understand what God is up to, His work becomes confusing, unwanted, dare we say it – ridiculous, and unnecessary. The truth? God does know what He is up to – and it is good. I, on the other hand, see in a mirror dimly (1 Corinthians 13:12).
If you stick around long enough, you’ll see trash trucks infest the neighborhood. One house at a time they will remove the trash. What looks to be an unwelcomed trashing of the yards is actually a step toward the removal of the unwelcome trash!
When our Father is up to stuff that doesn’t make sense in our lives, in our homes, and in our world, do we trust Him that He knows what He is doing and that what He is doing is good? Maybe God is bringing our sin front and center so that through repentance and faith He might haul it off? Now that’s good news!
