Updating

Eye-level view of a serene forest path leading into the sunlight

Dear Faith Family,

Stop being conformed to this world, but be being transformed by the renewal of your mind…, (Romans 12:2).

“Update.”  It happened again today.  My phone offered an update for one of the apps currently taking up residence in my phone.  Did you know that there’s even a place on your phone where you can tell your phone to check for updates?  Who knew?

What then?  Like how do updates work?  Let me try my hand at explaining updates.  Apparently, there’s an open phone line between your particular app and the mothership (alias: “the developer” – insert wink here).  From time to time in their running conversation either your app or “the developer” discovers that there is a difference between your app and the mothership, I mean “developer”.

And then?  Well, “the developer” offers an update.  A quick “ok” on your part and your app receives any updates – like bug fixes, security enhancements, unrecognizable graphics, etc. (while the mothership steals all your personal information and sends it directly to the mafia!).

Ok, maybe that’s not the best analogy.  But the whole update process is a way of life, a way of thinking that is consistent with being a disciple of Jesus Christ.  Our lives are in constant need of updates.  Our thought processes are often riddled with “bugs”.

Not convinced?  Can I offer an example?  Have we adopted inadequate ends to our God-given means?  Has school been reduced to a necessary evil?  Something that we mustget done to get on with real life?  Has work been reduced to a means to make money?  Is that all there is to our lives?  And has retirement been reduced to a state of existence designed to make us comfortable and happy?

Maybe it’s time for an update!  Time for us to plug into God’s revelation of Himself – His Word.  Time to calibrate our thinking against His Word (not to calibrate His Word against our thinking).

And when we check in for updates, here’s what we can discover.  Whatever our God-given means (school, work, retirement, etc.), we have a calling to more than simply making a passing grade, or supporting our family, or enjoying life.  We have a calling to be salt and light.  To fish…for people.  To make disciples!  What an update!  A high calling, indeed!  Let’s go fishin’!

Fishin',

Pastor Karl
